Story:The player takes the role of a namable Hero. The Hero's name has an effect on his statistical growth over the course of the game. Battles are fought in a turn-based format and experience points and gold are awarded after every battle, allowing the Hero to level-up in ability and allows them to buy better weapons, armor, and items. This was my introduction to RPGs. I remember my older brother, my father, and myself all creating save files on our NES cart and working away to get to the ending. They gave up after a while but I persevered...and eventually wiped out their saves so I could replay the game again and again. The game that started one of the biggest RPG franchises of all time, it absolutely deserves to be part of the GOG Preservation Program.
dragon quest is genuinely a really seminal and historical RPG in my mind. sure it's not the first rpg to ever be made, hell, it's technically not the first japanese rpg to be made. but it's the first rpg on a very seminal console that kind of created the movement of what we consider to be modern jrpgs and i think that's worth preserving and letting anyone give this game a try
This game is one of the OGs when it comes to JRPGs. In fact, it can be considered one of the foundational titles of the genre that shaped and influenced nearly every title that came after it. I remember first playing this game on a GBC cartridge that came with both I and II together, and it was so much fun, though as a child of the 90's, it was strange going back to a game where I had to deliberately choose to go down a set of stairs and not have it be automatic. We've been spoiled in our generation. Since then, I've played most of the main games and its many spinoffs, with Dragon Quest V still being a personal favorite, with Dragon Warrior Monsters being a close second. I definitely believe that the entire franchise should be made available for everyone to play.
This was my first video game RPG that I ever played. Also was the first the one that I ever completed.
I was used to playing D and D with my friends in the early '80s until the mid .80s. Then, unfortunately for me but fortunately for the video game industry, I moved away from them. So no more TTRPG. My mom bought me a Nintendo that Christmas with this game, known to me as Dragon Warrior, Legend of Zelda (gold cartridge), Defenders of the Crown and, of course, Super Mario Bros 3. I played Dragon Warrior first and fell madly in love with it. Of course I played the other games but I kept coming back to this one. Eventually I acquired a PC and I have been hooked on CRPGs ever since.
I would love for this game to get the GOG treatment.
This was the first RPG I played as a kid, great memories, farming the golden golem on the bottom right island helped me finish this game and opened my eyes to the world of RPG and then to Phantasy Star.
Back in that era of gaming everyone had a copy of this game because it was given away with Nintendo Power subscriptions, so anyone who had an affinity for RPGs knew about this game. It was a fun collective experience, and also as an RPG with a solo quest it was unique at the time for its challenge
The absolute first RPG I ever played. I had so much fun playing this game, have so many fond memories of it, & haven't been able to play it in decades. I would be overjoyed to be able to play this game again, & to introduce my nephews to this game. Future generations should be able to experience the game helped introduce so many of my generation to the genre.
Dragon Warrior was the first CRPG I ever played. I played the first three on the NES and loved them all. I never got into Final Fantasy or any other JRPG, but this series will remain a favorite
I spent far too many hours beating this on the Sega Game Gear while at Uni in the 90's - forget the usual must-have titles with bigger budgets, this in the one that I kept on coming back for more. Still holds up well under emulation but I wasn't aware there was a native PC version or port with improved GFX - time to do a little research!

Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed.
The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo.
As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity.
Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control.
