Syphon72: Sorry, I was talking about CNC.

Oriza-Triznyák: I'm sorry, i made a mistake . I wanted to quote Lord_Kane not you .
also I am familiar with the project, I speak with the dev on IEO's discord :) but the link will be useful to others, sometimes I forget to link things.

mqstout: These threads always make me sad that Armies of Exigo is likely lost to the mists of time. A victim of EA.
Decent Warcraft Clone. I'm concerned about Rising Kingdoms being on Steam but not on GOG. Good thing I have a physical copy backup.

In GoG's selection i probably enjoyed Homeworld Remastered and Dawn of War II most. While not being close to any type of base builder i did enjoy the challenge both games provide, and this coming from someone who actively participated in the creation of the Tower Defense Genre

If you want to try out a decent empire, instead of base, builder in real time Distant Worlds 2 is probably one of the best examples of close to succession you can find stored in the halls of GoG..... It might fit your more adult taste more than you would expect.

I'm btw dying to check out the new AI features CA recently added to WH III.... I think we are reaching 'interesting times'. Now only to adjust to the quantum layer of reality ... or wait for yet another sudden single summer holiday period @nerd
thanks to all for the numerous replies.

Lots to choose from, I would prefer the actual combat types to the Side Meier civilisation games though.

And for graphical purposes, so they aren't dated, not too old.

I'll have a look through all of these and grab a couple of GOG.

I'm not really familiar with STeam or Dosbox things, what are the problems with them ?

Syphon72: Warcraft 1 and 2, I think, are still on GOG.

Loria ( Warcraft Clone and it's free)
Act of War (Which is like CNC Generals)
8-bit armies ( plays like CNC )

I would also recommend these games if you like RTS.

Iron Harvest (plays like Company of Heroes)
Ancestors Legacy ( Plays like Company of Heroes)
Heroes of annihilated empire ( Plays like Warcraft )

There is more but I can't remember them all.
I just installed Act of War, and it told me to accept the multi game over the internet, or something.. Is this right ? So I have uninstalled it.

yes that is right, but the game will fully work for Skrimish and Single player offline, it was asking for Multiplayer reasons.

IIRC it just said yes or cancel (not No). So I presume i just choose cancel. Which I did, but wasn't sure if it was doing what I wanted.

Dawnsinger: A pity Battle for Wesnoth isn't on GOG.
To be fair, really no need to be here, it's already download-able from the website. It's one heck of a game and if GOG would brought it here would be a nice boost to publicity.

Just checked the website and whoo hooo! a new update with a new campaign... Guess what I will be doing for the weekend?

understandable.

SteveNE5: actual combat types
And a Slitherine Sale going on, what a combination. If there is one thing you can say about those boys its : "Gee, i like you your combat type"

Some real-time and pausable realtime combattants

Terminator
Battlestar Galactica
Distant Worlds 2
https://www.gog.com/en/game/close_combat_the_bloody_first]Close Combat:The Bloody First[/i]
https://www.gog.com/en/game/armored_brigade]Armored Brigade[/i]

You might want to check out some YT video's first before you decide to buy. Some of them are quite difficult or just absolutely not what you are looking for
To name a few more and to name a few that not name directly.

Ashes of Singularity (Escalation, Escalation is still in development)
Terminator Resistance
Stellar Warfare (In Dev)
Supreme Commander 1 and 2
To a lesser degree Supreme Ruler, because Battlegoat does the same game over and over again and moved to a new one on Steam only.
Cataclismo
Warno
Manor Lords
Dawn of War (Warhammer 40k)
Regiments
Star Trek Armada 1 and 2 (and for Armada 2 the Fleet Ops mod for skirmish)
Pretorians
Northgard
Knightshift
Submarine Titans
AI War 1 and 2
Driftland
Metal Fatigue
Homeworld was named, but there is Homeworld Emergence and Deserts of Kharak too.
Perimeter
Cossacks
Dragonshard
Celtic Kings
Knights and Merchants
ORB
Ground Control 1 and 2
Conquest Frontier Wars
Battle Realms

Maybe ICBM and Stronghold and Settlers, those are more into building up or Hegemony 1 and 2 with their very special Resource system.
And without building Sudden Strike and Steel Division and the Soldiers, Men of War and Faces of War games.

And when it comes to story told, I can just again name World in Conflict. Might be the strategic game with the best told story I played so far.

randomuser.833: DragonShard
Conquest Frontier Wars
Dragonshard is indeed a nice one, and still looks nice today, naming Conquest is quite daring, especially after i named Distant Worlds 2.... Who would ever want to engage in pure rts static fleet nonsense if you have games around that simulate fleet behaviour so much nicer than any RTS would be ever be capable off. there is also warhammer ofc and multiple ww2 fleet games

Because Distant Worlds is more 4X, while Conquest is RTS. Different scale, but still with a unique map system.
It has some nice ideas and systems, but does not overwhelm you.

Okay, so taken purely from a fun RTS game aspect, Conquest Frontier is indeed an agreeable game, you do need voodoo to run it right but that is about it. But if i look at your list you are all over the place, you even mention Manor Lords and Northgard, Knights and Merchants, Driftland. It could have been done with some more categorization if you ask me
