In GoG's selection i probably enjoyed Homeworld Remastered and Dawn of War II most. While not being close to any type of base builder i did enjoy the challenge both games provide, and this coming from someone who actively participated in the creation of the Tower Defense Genre
If you want to try out a decent empire, instead of base, builder in real time Distant Worlds 2 is probably one of the best examples of close to succession you can find stored in the halls of GoG..... It might fit your more adult taste more than you would expect.

I'm btw dying to check out the new AI features CA recently added to WH III.... I think we are reaching 'interesting times'. Now only to adjust to the quantum layer of reality ... or wait for yet another sudden single summer holiday period @nerd

thanks to all for the numerous replies.
Lots to choose from, I would prefer the actual combat types to the Side Meier civilisation games though.
And for graphical purposes, so they aren't dated, not too old.
I'll have a look through all of these and grab a couple of GOG.
I'm not really familiar with STeam or Dosbox things, what are the problems with them ?

Loria ( Warcraft Clone and it's free)
Act of War (Which is like CNC Generals)
8-bit armies ( plays like CNC )
I would also recommend these games if you like RTS.
Iron Harvest (plays like Company of Heroes)
Ancestors Legacy ( Plays like Company of Heroes)
Heroes of annihilated empire ( Plays like Warcraft )
There is more but I can't remember them all.

IIRC it just said yes or cancel (not No). So I presume i just choose cancel. Which I did, but wasn't sure if it was doing what I wanted.

To be fair, really no need to be here, it's already download-able from the website. It's one heck of a game and if GOG would brought it here would be a nice boost to publicity.
Just checked the website and whoo hooo! a new update with a new campaign... Guess what I will be doing for the weekend?

And a Slitherine Sale going on, what a combination. If there is one thing you can say about those boys its : "Gee, i like you your combat type"
Some real-time and pausable realtime combattants
Terminator
Battlestar Galactica
Distant Worlds 2

You might want to check out some YT video's first before you decide to buy. Some of them are quite difficult or just absolutely not what you are looking for

Dragonshard is indeed a nice one, and still looks nice today, naming Conquest is quite daring, especially after i named Distant Worlds 2.... Who would ever want to engage in pure rts static fleet nonsense if you have games around that simulate fleet behaviour so much nicer than any RTS would be ever be capable off. there is also warhammer ofc and multiple ww2 fleet games

It has some nice ideas and systems, but does not overwhelm you.
