Can't wait 'til Disney discovers what the devs made with Goofy.

I love it.

Can't wait until Marvel ips start entering the public domain (first Marvel issue in 1939, so that makes it 2035... barring awul luck, I should still be alive by then) and people can start doing whatever the heck they please with it.

Given that Star Wars was release in 1977, I'll be very old if not dead by the time it reaches public domain unfortunately. A shame, as I would have loved to see all of Disney's cash cows properly desecrated.

For Marvel and Star Wars, they may even come up with superior storylines that puts "official" releases to shame. Disney doesn't set the bar very high there.

The whole "take a popular children's character and make them into something creepy" has to be the worst, saddest, laziest bandwagon of the last decade.

Or take a popular children's character and take it into whatever direction you want which is something the original ip holder (ie, Disney) wouldn't have dared doing due to a desire to continuously monetize their ip around a carefully controlled image.

The original disney cast is now free and within my lifetime, so will a big chunk of the Marvel cast and within my daughter's lifetime, most of Disney's ips.

And then, Disney will be in trouble, competing conservatively with their money formulas on all their ips against the rest of the world, unconstained by such shackles. That will probably be the end (or at least, big shrinkage) of Disney and good riddance.

I completely fail to see what's so exciting about that, but sure. Fine. Whatever.

Sure, there will be some lame works far below the level of quality Disney provides, but there will also be great works, far beyond what Disney is capable of given their large corporation committee constraints.

Many previously Disney controlled ips will go to new heights and interesting new directions will be explored.

It will be free like music. You'll get a couple of lemons and then you'll get something brilliant.

Or, you know, people could just make something of their own instead of digging in the "other people's ideas 100% off" bin. If Flash Gordon was in public domain in 1977 Star Wars wouldn't exist.

It's a mix.

Some people want to create 100% original work and some people want to give their own spin to existing stories or settings, either because that is who they are (some people are great at interpreting existing works, but not world building) or because they have a flash of inspiration for a specific story and would rather focus on that that creating a brand new setting from scratch.

Either way, you could level that very accusation at Disney currently with their formula of buying and monetizing existing ips. Not only are they monetizing the same characters and settings continuously, but also with a notable lack of originality... which is why a lot of their ips kind of turn to shit over time. I'm sure some people out there could do far better with those ips.

The whole "take a popular Charles Perrault or Brothers Grimm character and make them into something baby-friendly" has to be the worst, saddest, laziest bandwagon that Disney has been riding for the past century. Disney even removed the toe chopping from Cinderella! What's wrong with toe chopping!?

And changing the moral and story of The Little Mermaid, which originally was about mortality and sacrifice. What was so wrong with the mermaid choosing to give up her own life in the end?
