Well I honestly wasn't aware of that case and it seems like an interesting one because of the reasons why it actually was indexed....

Yes, watching Schwarzwaldklinik hurts :P

Oh, I don't know. Did you know that they indexed one issue of the Sailor Moon Magazin? Considering this is aimed at children I think it's even more ridiculous than indexing die Schwarzwaldklinik.^^

The fun thing regarding Dark Forces: they even censored the German version of it and still it got indexed. That was the reason they did not even bother to translate Dark Forces II (Jedi Knight) which did NOT got indexed. German youth protection (lol) laws at its work.

But to make it clear for all non Germans: indexed games are NOT banned and they are not forbidden to buy - you just aren't allowed to advertize them and you have to proof your age when you buy them. It was never a problem to import such titles so basically buying them on GOG should not be a problem at all.

Then again: at the moment there is a game on GOG banned in Germany - no blocking yet ... I bought it yesterday just because and I am waiting now. Those laws are funny - sometimes they are valid and sometimes they are not ;)

InfraSuperman: If I'm not mistaken, anyone can submit an application for the indexing of a particular game, record, movie or book to the BPJM, who will then examine the medium in question and decide whether or not it's actually "harmful to minors".
How exactly they come to those decisions is anyone's guess, as the whole process is rather nebulous.

Additionally, an indexing normally only lasts 25 years, unless it's renewed. If a company wants to get something off the list prematurely, they also have to make an application for that, pay a fee and be very persuasive.
That is absolutely correct. The hight costs for a new evaluation are the main reason that not many publishers try to get their games from the index. Afaik according to German law there is no pre-censoring so there has to be an application because the BPjM is not allowed to index a game just because they would like to do so themselves.

The fun thing about this very special case is that it was not even legal because the institution which indexed it was not responsible for television at all. So they had to de-index it but the ZDF never showed the uncensored versions of those episodes - they are not even on the DVDs (yes, I like the series and have no problem admitting it :)).

Okay that's just ridiculous...but sounds very much like something the ZDF would do....

Oh, that is quite surprising... Which game would that be? I might have to rummage around for a bit now...

On the other hand, imagine my surprise when I discovered Steam has no qualms about selling Far Cry to my excitable German self, a game which I can't purchase on Gog (the store page doesn't mention any sort of low violence/censored version either, and obviously I'm not using any sort of VPN or other trickery).
