Step into the definitive re-release of two dark spell-casting shooters that shaped the genre – Heretic + Hexen is now available on GOG!

Forged by Raven Software on a modified DOOM engine, Heretic and Hexen were released in 1994 and 1995, pushing first person shooters into bold new territory. These innovative cult classics introduced groundbreaking features like inventory systems, vertical aiming, and distinct character classes, reshaping first person action games for generations to come. This enhanced restoration makes Heretic Hexen available to new audiences and long-time fans with expanded accessibility across more platforms and languages than ever before. Whether you're returning to these shadowy realms or discovering them for the first time, an epic legacy awaits.

If you already own any of the original games, this edition will be automatically added to your library.

Now on GOG – and you can enjoy even more from Bethesda during QuakeCon 2025!

Tarhiel: Absolutely fantastic, NightDive + Bethesda + GOG, just like Doom, and for free in my game library!
Insta-like! :)
Since you mention it, I hope this pack doesn't give me the same problems I have with DOOM+DOOMII on Windows 11.
To be able to play temporarily I had to apply a downgrade (when updating) to get it working and it only works once and then becomes unplayable.

Have you had that problem with the DOOM Pack?

I hope that at some point this problem will be resolved.
Don't forget to backup your classic Heretic and Hexen installers, if you already owned them.

Bethesda has occasionally wiped out older entries when releasing a new build or version.
Anyway, thanks for the free upgrade! :)
Oh look, a Nightdive release. You know what's coming now.... Another reminder, Nightdive:

Where is release parity, Nightdive? Come on now, Nightdive. It stopped being funny several years ago, Nightdive. Still waiting for Z.A.R. and MadSpace, NightDIVE!!! NIGHTDIVE!!!! ARE YOU THERE, NIGHTDIVE???

Will see you in the next release thread as I'm sure nothing will have changed by then ;)

I am still on W10, so no problems here ;)
Most excellent release and huge thanks for the free upgrade to previous owners!
Thank you Nightdive, Bethesda & GOG.

Now I am ready to pay for Rage 1+2 ;-D
high rated
This is nice and all, thanks for that. But where are the RAGE games? Or Doom Eternal?
For anyone wondering, Heretic + Hexen does not have separate DOS installers. If you want to play the DOS versions of these games, then you need to install the games using the normal installer, then go into the "dos" subfolder, then to the "dosbox" subfolder, and then click the "Launcher.exe" executable.

According to Nightdive's Larry Kuperman, the plan for, I assume 2025 is to bring 5 Nightdive-associated titles to GoG.
With the releases of System Shock 2 25th Anniversary Remaster and now the Heretic + Hexen KEX ports done this would leave 2 (or 3, if the bundle counts as one title) more for this year.

Installer calls the game Medusa, and the enhancement settings and co-op settings appear to be missing. Did we get a pre-release WIP version instead?

Edit: The enhancement settings are found by pressing Tab when choosing a difficulty setting for a new game, so it all looks fine and it might just be that Medusa is a leftover from the development process.

What about Linux versions?

Doom 1+2 was called Osiris at first, as I recall. So yeah, probably a remnant of the development process.
Free updates are always nice. Thanks!

I'm guessing next year will be Hexen II's turn to receive the same treatment...
Nice surprise, and excellent time to replay the games again.

EDIT: Browsing for mods is tied into Bethesda.net, but seems to support local mods as well.

paladin181: I'm confused. Didn't we already have Heretic and Hexen? II thought we were waiting on Heretic II, which is partially owned by Activision/Blizzard
We did. But now Hexen II is out of the combo-pack, and the two others have a brand new episode each. + the price is higher than when the combo was offered.

And Heretic II is still nowhere to be seen, unless ZeniMax Media Inc. gets their hands on the defunct Activition rights.

Still no Heretic 2 nor Portal of Praevus?
guess the IP situation must be really difficult to solve...
