mrkgnao: I backup all my games --- gog, steam, epic --- fairly religiously on an external 14TB HDD. And I encourage others to do so too.

Nice idea for a giveaway. Judging by my wishlist, I am looking forward to B, C, D, F, G, H, R and V.
14TB? Dammit, that's something! Wow :)
Thank you and congratulations, for yet another giveaway, from me too!

What I tend to do, is download a game only when I’m about to play it, not before. So, when I’m about to play it, I will have the latest version GOG offers. After I finish it, I copy the files (and the saves sometimes) on an external HDD. So, if GOG uploads another (newer) version of that game I finished, I don’t download that one too. I stay content with the game, as it was when I played and finished it.

Mind you, for now it is only half full.
Okay, I will wait until some of the games on my wishlist are poped up. I know it's hard, but please don't look at my wishlist. Also, I know Doc's type of selection, and I won't add any Doc-type games. So, let the ultimate challenge begin.

Thanks
What a crazy idea! :D
Thank you as always, Doc!

As for me, I add the thread to my favorites to check out games' selection :D – as always, non-obvious and fascinating in the case of Doc! :) I've never heard of "The Axis Unseen", interesting finding, however not my cup of tea. Good luck to everyone interested in heavy metal horrors! :)

One day I'll do the same. For now limited storage complicates using auto-backup tools.
Any advice in terms of HDD selection? I've heard that quality and reliability of such drives may be a problem today. If one of your 1TB drives dies, it's OK, but investing in something like 14TB I'd rather expect some level of safety and quality.

As someone who has worked in the industry (on the SDD side of things), I can safely say that all brands are more or less the same. I simply buy the cheapest at the time I need it, which for me always ends being either Western Digital or Seagate,

I expect them to die within a few years, at which point I buy a replacement.

For games, I keep only one copy on a large non-portable external HDD. When it dies, I have scripts to download everything automatically again from gog, steam and epic.

For important stuff (most everything else), I keep four copies: the working one on my desktop, two portable HDDs (one kept at home, one taken with me when I travel), and a USB drive (goes everywhere with me). I make backups about once every fortnight.

sasuke12: Just curious, does everyone back up their offline installers on a usb drive, pc hard drive, icloud or some other more convenient piece of technology I have never heard of ?
24TB external hard drive. A few of them I've even burned to a disc and even printed out some covers made by RenKalan.

RenKalan covers:

Ok, I must say it's impressive BenKii :)
....but I'm just celebrating my first backup....
Though original cases are great for offline installers, Banished looks good with the mentioned printout.

This is a journey, the size doesn't matter, I got two Terabytes because it's cold,
Doc, amputate their discs, it's way too big x D

Co-concluded that Codex allows players to back up the most potent backups, going for 300 boxes with optical discs, some 200 DVDs and 200 CDs gives a couple of terabytes more

And a 1 TB SD card, games work like mad ....call it a working backup
I like to consider GOG.com an internet disc for backups, somehow content is changing for the newest : D

A for A Good Luck!^° coming for B

I do the same for my important data too. LOL! People think I'm strange for doing this. Glad to see I'm not. ;) But I've only three, instead of four copies: a primary backup at my place, a secondary backup at a separate physical location (in case my place burns to the ground or is broken into) and one on my desktop.

But, 14TB!! Wow! :D

Oh, I love your quaint setup! The wood adds a nice touch of warmth and coziness! :) I'm going to pretend you live in a treehouse high up in the sky! xD Great covers, by the way.

I have them in two places, first on the slower NVMe on my computer and monthly or so the backup on the external HDD gets updated.

Opposite here, I try to go for the best I can afford and expect it to last. Had some real bad luck with Seagate in the past with that strategy, though the warranty meant that I didn't lose the money, but since I switched away from them it's been working for quite some time. Last storage failure was back in 2013, and the WDs bought them still worked when I got this computer late last year (and still do on the old one, which I booted up a few more times since). The SSD, which I moved to this computer as well, was bought in 2018. The first external HDD bought in 2017 and used till 2022, when I got the current one, but have gotten back to also using that old one recently for OS backups.

Great idea for a giveaway Doc! I do backup my installers, both on USB drives and on hard drives, but lately it has been becoming ever more difficult as game sizes have grown - before, I even backed up some games on burnable CDs but now that's no longer feasible for newer games.

Backing up games is not only for preservation, it's also sometimes necessary for efficient swapping of games, e.g. if my main gaming computer's hard drive runs out of space and I have to uninstall something to make room for a new game or for an update patch of an existing game.

I'm not sure if this is an Assemblage or a Voodoo Doll, and I'm afraid to ask at this point.
