Mafwek: Agh, yours is better but still terrible. And 4:3 resolution would probably cause me motion sickness. All in all, Definitive Edition seems to be the best version of vanilla game.

vv221: Still terrible? Motion sickness from a top-down strategy game? I call bullshit on that.

If you need to rationalise the money you spent on an upscaled texture pack, at least try to have some convincing arguments…
I don't have to rationalize or justify anything. I've spent money on outright bad products, and as far as remasters go this is a quite a decent one, better pathfinding and controls are great changes.
I would agree game doesn't quite justify 30 € price tag yet, I think 20 € I paid for it are okay. I just hope there will be updates which will fix my current issues with the game.
So I found I had the anniversary edition on Steam, which I was gifted a long time ago because I added the keys from my physical discs to Steam. This means I'm eligible for the 30% discount from Steam.

However, when I link my Steam account to GOG, the game shows up as "Game of the Year Edition" rather than "Anniversary Edition". As a result, the discount is not applied when I add it to my cart.

I want to purchase on GOG because of DRM free, but you're not making it easy. Why isn't the game being recognised properly in GOG Galaxy?
As already pointed out a couple of times you obviously need to own the Anniversary Edition on GOG to be eligible for the discount of the Definitive Edition on GOG.

By linking my Steam and GOG accounts, I *do* have it on GOG. It's right there.

I'm trying to give GOG my money here, but if they don't want it, that's fine, I guess.

You didn't purchase Anniversary on GOG though, right? By linking, are you talking about linking Steam to GOG's Galaxy client? That's not the same thing as having purchased it on GOG.

For owners of the original DoW - Anniversary Edition on GOG that aren't getting the discount, check if the store says you own the game. If you bought the game through a bundle, chances are the store doesn't recognize you own the game (this is a long standing issue with how the GOG store works). Your best bet is a support ticket.

Yeah, using the api plugin to "import" your steam library to Galaxy doesn't count as purchasing the game on GOG. It only serves to have all your games listed in one place (in this case, GOG library), but it even runs steam (or other platform) before launching such an added game.
It works in the exact same manner as Steam's option of "add a non-steam game to library", which just creates the entry for a non-steam game in your steam library, but also doesn't count as purchasing it on Steam.

As a sidenote, there used to be this program, GOG Connect or somesuch, that allowed you to scan your steam library for select titles and redeem GOG copies of those. But I don't think DoW was ever a part of it, and the program also seems long dead.

LastingJack: Two years ago, I bought the anniversary edition. The game didn’t even start. And GOG refused to give me my money back (even though it shows that I "played" for 2 minutes).
Question: is there anyone in my situation for whom this version works? (so I don’t get fooled again)
The hardware is the same: asus rog with nvidia 3050, win 11, it should work.

Syphon72: May be CPU issue or possibly third-party software causing problems. RivaTuner is known to crash older games at startup.

I have same OS and GPU as you. Game was working for me.
It’s a Ryzen 7 6800HS x64. Definitely not Riva or any other third-party software. The only old game that causes problems, the rest run fine (old or new). Anyway, even on Steam people are having the same issue with the Definitive Edition, same error: start – black screen – “failed to initialize videocard error.” At least there you can get a refund :)

WinterSnowfall: Precisely my point. It's a wasted opportunity to actually add something of value, besides cosmetics, to justify the additional purchase.

wh1tepointer: It's a possible limitation of the engine. Back when the game was at its height of popularity, there were plenty of players begging for Relic to add the Tyranids to the game. Relic repeatedly responded to these requests saying that they couldn't do the Tyranids justice in the DOW engine. So it could just be a simple case of the technology preventing them from including the Tyranids in a way they and the fans would want. To include them now could require a substantial rewrite of 20+ year old code.

Mind you, when DoW II came out and included Tyranids, it didn't look like they were doing anything that couldn't have been done in the OG DOW's engine.
There is a thing or 2 to be said for be able to produce something as Lore friendly as possible..... I mean i think in most cases you could say that it is actually impossible to play around with races such as Eldar or Tyranids with human hands

Didn't GWS also start out quite basic... soon to be overwhelmed by financial prospects and beggars anywhere

I think CA came close with creating a certain feeling of dread when facing off against Chaos opponents such as Skaven and chaos dwarves.... or Dark Elves in single player.

DoW even with all its qualities is quite a standard RTS at the end of the day

Yeah GOG Connect was basically about helping to kickstart a new-to-GOG Steam user's library of games here, and I guess it wasn't worthwhile for GOG and has been dead since I believe 2021. It was cool though; I got Limbo here through it.
Is the veteran discount permanent, or does it expire on the 18th?
